Potential Super Bowl Matchup?

Over this past weekend, the Washington Commanders took on the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore for the iconic DMV Battle of the Beltways. Many fans were anticipating this game due to the emergence of potential rookie of the year Jayden Daniels over the past couple weeks. There were even talks of potentially flexing the game to the primetime spot so fans could witness the first showdown between JD5 and Lamar Jackson, two dynamic rushing quarterbacks who have made waves throughout the league.

The game did not disappoint with the Baltimore Ravens just barely getting the edge over the Commanders in a one-score victory. Zay Flowers had a career game, reaching 132 receiving yards through 9 catches. Both offenses displayed why these two teams are in the discussion for potentially reaching the super bowl this year. The Ravens offense had 484 total offensive yards with the Commanders having 305.

The Ravens completely shut down the Commander's 2nd best rush offense in the league and showed everyone why we are the #1 rush defense currently. On the other hand, Derrick Henry continues to lead our rush offense, powering through and having another 100+ yard rushing game despite the fact that he is 30 years old - an age which many running backs in the league typically expire by.

With the Ravens and Commanders both looking bright this season - do you think its possible that we could see a rematch between these two teams in the Super Bowl?

My Picks for the Week:

Buffalo Bills vs. New York Jets: Buffalo Bills (-125)
The Bills have lost the past 2 games. They're a much better team than they have looked the past 2 weeks. The Jets look super shaky and just lost their head coach. Bills at -125 is the best value pick I've seen all week... its only right.

Kansas City Chiefs vs. San Francisco 49ers: Chiefs (-105)
The back-to-back Super Bowl champs still look as strong as ever with Patrick Mahomes at the helm. The loss of Rashee Rice hurts the Chiefs offense, however the 49ers are also missing McCaffrey still. I like the Chiefs here again in the Super Bowl rematch.

Detroit Lions vs. Minnesota Vikings: Lions (+100)
The Vikings look hot as ever, still undefeated and at the top of the NFC currently. However, every team needs a heat check. The Lions just killed the Cowboys and look like they're showing no signs of slowing down with their powerhouse offense. I think the Vikings' streak ends this week.\

Welcome to Halftime Headlines!

Hey everyone, My name is Mason Gough. I'm a communications student with a marketing minor at Salisbury University. I'm starting this blog as a part of a sports communications class I'm currently taking with Dr. Burns. I've always been super interested in sports and played soccer growing up ever since I was old enough to kick a ball. However, I've been a fan of all sports and got my first taste of the sports communication/marketing world when I had the opportunity to intern for the Delmarva Shorebirds, a triple-A farm team for the Baltimore Orioles. I plan on updating this blog throughout the semester with current and relevant topics that are happening throughout the sports world. Hope you follow along! Winners and losers from NFL week 1: Every week during the NFL season, I want to go over some of the biggest winners and losers from the previous week and discuss some things that a few teams did really well and also did really not well. Thank you for reading!

Since the beginning of this blog, we've discussed a few things involving a variety of sports, including football, soccer, tennis, and more. I've had a great time writing this blog which really got me out of my comfort zone regarding my writing ability.  Discussing sports and doing sports research is something that I have always really enjoyed, but I never knew I would be capable of doing some kind of blog such as this. However, with my life getting more and more busy and being on the brink of graduation from college, I have decided that I am going to call Halftime Headlines to a halt.  This has been a great learning experience and I have enjoyed these weekly blogs. Making weekly picks between teams turned out to also be a great test of my knowledge and I enjoyed coming back every week to see how my predictions turned out along with my analysis and breakdown of the two sides. I want to thank everyone who has tuned in and followed my blog throughout the course of this seme...

Is VAR ruining soccer? An opinion on technology’s impact on “the beautiful game”

Over the course of the past few years, VAR , or video assistant referee technology has left many football/soccer fans torn over whether technology truly has a place in the game. This VAR technology was originally created to reduce human error when making decisions regarding fouls and penalties. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that VAR technology is causing more harm than good throughout the sport. As a result, VAR has changed the natural flow, emotion and overall experience of the average soccer match, which are core components of this historical sport. All soccer fans and players have had an experience with a bad referee at one point or another. Whether it be a late or questionable offside call, a game-altering red card, or a penalty decision that changes the momentum of the game, these errors have haunted the sport since its creation. One notorious instance of these pre-VAR problems occurred during the 1986 World Cup match between Argentina and England . Diego Maradon...
