Jayden Daniels Masterclass

Welcome back to Halftime Headlines. This week I wanted to touch on how history was made Monday night between the Washington Commanders and the Cincinnati Bengals.

In my last blog post, I wrote about how the Commanders were the biggest losers of the week because of how Jayden Daniels' strong debut performance was overshadowed by the massive mistakes made on the defensive side of the ball. This week I have decided to write regarding the same topic - however on a much more positive note.

Daniels made history on Monday by overtaking Dak Prescott for the rookie passing completion percentage record with an impressive 91.3% which compares to Dak's 88.9%. The Commanders offense as a whole has been making huge strides the past couple weeks, with the team not having punted or given up a single turnover in the past two games. They have scored on every single drive with the exception of taking a kneel at the end of the half or the game. Interestingly enough, the Bengals also did not punt or concede any turnovers, which could simply be credited to how poor the Commanders defense has been.

With that being said, its becoming pretty evident that the Commanders got a potentially generational player here with Daniels. He's outperforming every other rookie quarterback so far this season and has shown complete composure in the pocket, scrambling when he needs to but holding the ball and looking to make a play before doing so. For the first time this week, we got a great look at his arm, completing 2/3 deep balls, 1 being for the game sealing touchdown. He also threw for his first touchdown and another, also tacking on a rushing touchdown.

The Commanders are going to be an exciting team to watch this year. If they can get their defense together and start making some stops, they mightt have potential to maintain their current position and finish the season above .500.

Do you think JD5 has got what it takes to lead this team to the top of the NFC East?

My picks for this upcoming week:

Cincinnati Bengals vs Carolina Panthers: Bengals (-220) The 0-3 Bengals might be one of the best 0-3 teams in history. All 3 games they've lost have close. An unfortunate week 1 loss to the Patriots followed by a 1 point loss to the back-to-back Super Bowl champions. They just lost to the Commanders who played a near perfect game. The Bengals are due.

Minnesota Vikings vs Green Bay Packers: Vikings (+110) The Vikings are a super sneaky team that has been putting up points against good teams. Its easy to pick a 3-0 team to continue to win, however the Packers are without Jordan Love still.

Pittsburgh Steelers vs Indianapolis Colts: Colts (+100) The Steelers are the complete opposite situation as the Bengals. They are easily the most overhyped 3-0 team ever. Their offense is so incomplete. The only reason they win games is because of their defense and because they have only played bad and injury-ridden teams. Plus, we need the Ravens to make up some ground here.

Welcome to Halftime Headlines!

Hey everyone, My name is Mason Gough. I'm a communications student with a marketing minor at Salisbury University. I'm starting this blog as a part of a sports communications class I'm currently taking with Dr. Burns. I've always been super interested in sports and played soccer growing up ever since I was old enough to kick a ball. However, I've been a fan of all sports and got my first taste of the sports communication/marketing world when I had the opportunity to intern for the Delmarva Shorebirds, a triple-A farm team for the Baltimore Orioles. I plan on updating this blog throughout the semester with current and relevant topics that are happening throughout the sports world. Hope you follow along! Winners and losers from NFL week 1: Every week during the NFL season, I want to go over some of the biggest winners and losers from the previous week and discuss some things that a few teams did really well and also did really not well. Thank you for reading!

Since the beginning of this blog, we've discussed a few things involving a variety of sports, including football, soccer, tennis, and more. I've had a great time writing this blog which really got me out of my comfort zone regarding my writing ability.  Discussing sports and doing sports research is something that I have always really enjoyed, but I never knew I would be capable of doing some kind of blog such as this. However, with my life getting more and more busy and being on the brink of graduation from college, I have decided that I am going to call Halftime Headlines to a halt.  This has been a great learning experience and I have enjoyed these weekly blogs. Making weekly picks between teams turned out to also be a great test of my knowledge and I enjoyed coming back every week to see how my predictions turned out along with my analysis and breakdown of the two sides. I want to thank everyone who has tuned in and followed my blog throughout the course of this seme...

Is VAR ruining soccer? An opinion on technology’s impact on “the beautiful game”

Over the course of the past few years, VAR , or video assistant referee technology has left many football/soccer fans torn over whether technology truly has a place in the game. This VAR technology was originally created to reduce human error when making decisions regarding fouls and penalties. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that VAR technology is causing more harm than good throughout the sport. As a result, VAR has changed the natural flow, emotion and overall experience of the average soccer match, which are core components of this historical sport. All soccer fans and players have had an experience with a bad referee at one point or another. Whether it be a late or questionable offside call, a game-altering red card, or a penalty decision that changes the momentum of the game, these errors have haunted the sport since its creation. One notorious instance of these pre-VAR problems occurred during the 1986 World Cup match between Argentina and England . Diego Maradon...
